FIRST before I let you in on the craziness that was the auction prep.
We raised $2180! how amazing is that!!! Thank you everyone of you that contributed and donated to this amazing cause.
So rewind 3 days prior to the auction. I woke up as normal, and wanted to get stuck in and get my hands dirty. So as some would have remembered me clearing a landslide from the earthquake with Hrinzen and Om. Using a long steel bar I loosened the dirt and rocks to then be shovel away, allowing the rocks a boulders to be used in the construction of the new home.
Later that day, I began to get a headache, nothing major I thought, just a pain. Took my contact lenses out and took some pain killers. It never shifted, then I started to get a fever. I lay down in the tent and tried sleeping it of. It wasn’t long and I was awake with the churning of my stomachs. I’ll let you fill in the gaps, but that night was torture, completely draining me. Literally.
The next day I never left the tent as I was so sick, with no strength at all. I knew the auction was the next day and I was really concerned that I had not promoted it the last 48 hours due to my sickness. SO I ask Hrinzen to do a wee broadcast to share the message, he did well for his first scope, fighting a bad signal he got our message out.
To top all that of we had a power cut, that was to last 3 days! How will we manage to do this auction!!!
The next morning after maybe a few hours sleep I was up and ready to get the auction on the go. Freezing cold I pulled myself up and went for a cold shower at the communal tap that feeds fresh water from the mountains. Let me tell you, IT”S FREEZING! but gets the blood flowing and wakes you up!
I went back to the tent to find Hrinzen was still lying there. This is the same guy who normally is bouncing about at this time ready to take on the world. He was SICK!
He had what I just experienced.
Do we cancel? people would understand right?
Or do we gather the strength and just get the fook on with it!!!
No question the auction had to go ahead. No excuses, we’ve families to build homes for and that to me is worth suffering personally for a few hours.
After encouraging Hrinzen to gather some strength we battled on and did the auction witch in my opinion was an amazing success. Raising over $2000 we raised enough to build another home in Thangpalkot 1.
With the auction over, we both essentially collapsed into our beds and chilled. I was starting to feel a bit better, probably due to the adrenaline of the auction. Where as Hrinzen was out for the count. He lay in bed all day.
Let the witch doctors do their thing!
Around 4-5pm Hrinzen took a turn for the worse, he was lying in pain, only making groaning noises and shivering. I was worried, as he had mentioned the last time he felt like this he had typhoid! yes TYPHOID! I was thinking, this isn’t ideal. It’s actually far from ideal, especially since I was still not 100%.
I tried asking him, what do you do in situations like this? I need to get a jeep to take us to Kathmandu to get you medical attention. He never responded. The only thing I thought I could do was to go for help. There are 2 other people that speak broken English. I tried to find with no success. After looking for 5 mins I managed to get my message to a group of men that knew me and my concerned face gave it away that I needed help.
They followed me to the tent where Hrinzen was still lying in pain, moaning and groaning. The elder lifted him up chatted and from his face it wasn’t good. He gestured to Hrinzens worried grandmother who was standing at the tent door to get something.
To see anyone in pain is not good, but to see someone you regard as a brother, in tears of pain rocking back and forward was horrible.
In comes a plate with rice, what looked like spices and something that looked like rock salt.
The uncle who was the witch doctor, started the ritual of chanting and throwing rice around the tent. With his bear like hand, he pinched together the spices then grabbed Hrinzens head and moved it and chanted more, this time sucking the air around him. All I could think was The Green Mile with Tom Hanks! He then placed something in his mouth, that he pulled from his pocket, it crunched away on it, looking like a bulldog chewing a wasp.
This went on for 5-10 mins then he left for another man to do the same.
Hrinzen was actually better for it all. I could now speak to him. I could now ask the questions about going to the hospital.
He said i’ll be ok, give me 2 hours i’ll be fine. I was like naw Hrinzen no is the time. You need some medicine.
2 hours passed and right enough he was better!!!
I couldn’t believe it, the next morning, he was up and almost back to himself. I did the video in the blog and we jumped on the bus to Kathmandu to get checked out at the hospital. It turns out we had a bacterial infection that caused all the sickness. I was told to rest for the week and recover before going back to the village.
What an unreal few days and an experience I will never forget.
